Part One  Translation  50% (75points)
I. Translate the following into Chinese. (40 points, 8 points for each item)
1) The miseries I saw, as a boy, in the lives of nearly all men I continue to see in the lives of many---the body breaking toil, the tedium, the call to be tough, the humiliating powerlessness, the battle for a living and for territory.
2) As Financial Action Task Force official John Carlson noted, “even criminals like to keep their money somewhere safe,” and the world’s banks and financial institutions bear a share of the blame for the growth in money laundering. The FATF, created in 1989, has focused its energies on obliging banks and governments to tighten their rules regarding anonymity in financial affairs.
3) Like Socrates, I suppose I could say that I loved wisdom, since I after all knew who was wise and who was not, and that I wanted to behave like the former and not the latter. But actual wisdom is something that escapes me.
4) With life departed, the ocean would become, in effect, one enormous cesspool. Billions of decay bodies, large and small, would create such an insupportable stench that man would be forced to leave all the coastal regions.
5) Science students do well in non-science courses, but non-science students have difficulty in science courses. Slaves of exactness find it easier to adjust to the inexact, though they may be disdainful of it, than do those who think in the realm of the inexact when confronted with the exact. 
II. Translate the following into English. (35 points, 7 points for each item)
1）新书《蚁族》（nt Tribes）描绘了北漂大学毕业生的生活，他们就像蚂蚁，头脑聪明，但作为个体微不足道，只有在群落中“聚族而居”才能获得力量。
2）我国正处于对外投资加快发展的重要阶段，要加强宏观指导，强化政策支持，简化审批手续，健全服务保障。
3）科学可能是一把双刃剑。要随时提防有人把新技术用于不正当的手段。比如，医疗上使用的克隆技术( therapeutic cloning)，就应该防止用于复制人类这样有违道德的用途。
4）对迟到者而言，无论他们怎样安排好充裕的时间，好让赴约变得从容，但他们依旧是约会上最后的出现者。迟到者以迟到来自视高于别人，因为毋容置疑，别人在等待中会不断想到自己。
5） 这座古寺年久失修，香火渐衰，已经风光不再。
Part Two   Writing   50% (75points)
I. Write a letter on the following topic.( 25points)
  You have been living in a rental apartment for the past year. Recently a new neighbor moved in and has been making a lot of noise, which disturbs you.
Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:
• explain the situation
• describe why it bothers you
• suggest a solution
You should write at least 150 words.
You do NOT need to write your name and address.

II. Write an essay on the following topic. ( 50points)
  More than a decade ago, Chinese government began allowing couples to have two kids if both parents were only-children. Recently officials took a further step in that direction, announcing that if just one parent is an only child, a couple can have a second child as well. Many Chinese are pleased with the recent announcement that the government will further loosen the one-child policy. Some couples there are already allowed to have two children, while others say that even if they are permitted to have another kid, they can't afford it. Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:
Will You Decide to Have Two Kids With Relaxation Of One-Child Policy?
You should write at least 300 words. In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion or a summary.
Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar and appropriateness. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.
